Job Description |

As the project develops, the Design Authority function will: - be the intelligent customer for the safety case, through technical oversight during licensing, procurement, manufacture, construction, commissioning and operation; - understand and eventually own and control the safety case for the plant and technical detail of the plant design, function and performance; - assisting understanding how detailed design changes impact on the functional design of the NSSS; - maintain design integrity by ensuring modification proposals for the plant from EDF Engineering are consistent with the original design intent or fully justified as alterations; - assist the interface with the regulators on technical matters; - be fully effective by the time of fuel load on the first unit.
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES: 1. To become a subject matter expert (mechanically) in the PWR design. This will include the steam generators for pressurised water reactors and the associated piping in a nuclear power plant. 2. Undertaking project engineering of the NSSS Long Lead time Item procurement. 3. To develop an understanding of NSSS design and safety case sufficient to act in the capacity of "intelligent customer". 4. Reviews contractor submissions (Functional Specs, Equipment Specs, Quality Plans, Systems Design Manuals) to ensure Design Integrity is maintained. 5. Supporting DA ownership of the NSSS definition within the POSR in the field of mechanical engineering. 6. Design codes and inspection programmes. 7. Providing reviews of OpEX as required. 8. Supporting interface with NII on mechanical engineering issues as required. 9. Advising the Owner on impact of quality issues in manufacturing and installation. 10. Supports audits as required. 11. Undertakes assessment of modifications in the relevant areas. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Qualifications and Experience • First degree in mechanical engineering. • Mechanical engineering in a nuclear context e.g. in the design/assessment of pressure vessels, pressure systems to nuclear design codes, system design. • Ideally experience of LWR reactor pressure vessels, piping and/or rotating plant. • Ideally, be a Chartered Engineer (or able to reach Chartered status quickly). • French language skills are highly desirable, and additional training will be given. Understanding of working across country boundaries highly desirable. • Experience with UK Regulators, and preferably PWR systems. • Experience within a Design Authority preferred.
