Our client is seeking a Materials Engineer who will be responsible for providing the design authority with a view on issues of design with regards to material selection.
You will be responsible for providing a design authority view on issues of design for materials selection, manufacture and hand over for assembly of the major forgings for the NSSS (Nuclear Steam Supply Systems) and support assessing proposals for specifications affecting discharges.
As the project develops you will act as the intelligent customer for the safety case, through technical oversight during licensing, procurement, manufacture, construction, commissioning and operation. You will be able to understand and eventually own and control the safety case for the plant and technical detail of the plant design, function and performance.
You will maintain design integrity by ensuring modification proposals for the plant are consistent with the original design intent or fully justified as alterations. You will lead the interface with the regulators on technical matters and be fully effective by the time of fuel load on the first unit
The successful candidate will report to the NSSS Procurement Technical Lead Engineer. This post is empowered to take all significant and important decisions in its main key accountability areas, under the overall guidance of the NSSS Procurement Technical Lead Engineer.
You will be accountable for developing an understanding of NSSS design, environmental assessments and safety case sufficient to act in the capacity of "intelligent customer". You will work within DIN to support BAT/BPEO and ALARP assessments for NSSS specifications, liaising with RPA and QES. You will review contractor submissions (Functional Specs, Equipment Specs, Systems Design Manuals) to ensure design integrity is maintained and you will support the design authority ownership of the NSSS definition within the PCSR in the field of materials.
You will be the interface with the NII on material issues as required and you will be required to advise our client on impact of quality issues in manufacturing and installation. You will also develop your understanding of structural integrity issues.
Some travel and time away will be necessary to interface with the Architect Engineer and other parts of our client company.
