As a result of an impending retirement, a vacancy has arisen for an experience Thermal and Fluid Flow analyst to join our established Thermal Analysis Office within the Analytical Services group
Areas covered by the group include Stress and Vibration Analysis, Physics Analysis, Safety and Reliability and Materials (Metallurgy) in addition to Thermal and Fluid Flow Analysis.
As a key member of the Thermal and Fluid Flow analysis office, you will be familiar with the following activities and proficient in many of them:
Heat transfer and fluid flow analysis by classical (text-book) methods Finite difference, lumped parameter techniques Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Steady state and transient analysis Passive, buoyancy driven, cooling flow systems Wind tunnel testing Flow and temperature measurement, calibration Pump and fan performance On-site commissioning of ventilation and cooling systems - UK and overseas Laboratory and workshop testing of equipment to support analytical assessments On-site thermal commissioning testing - UK and overseas Thermal assessment of irradiated fuel transport flasks Thermal assessment of dry storage systems for irradiated fuel Thermal assessment to support safety case licence applications
As a thermal and fluid flow analyst you will make use of computer codes both to assist with the design of new facilities and equipment and to carry out analysis required to enable modification or decommissioning of existing systems. Current computer codes include ANSYS (finite element), MELTAN (SINDA-G, finite difference), FLOWMATHER (pipework flows) and HEVACOMP (HVAS design).
Brief Person Description
Qualified to degree level with a good honours degree, probably in mechanical engineering. Wells motivated, able to work on your own and as part of a team and having a genuine interest in this type of work along with a determination to provide expertise in all relevant aspects. Good communication skills enabling professional reporting of work and effective liaison within your team and other departments as well as with out customers' representatives. To work for out Nuclear/Defence customer, the applicant must have been resident in the UK for a minimum of five years and must have (or be willing for us to apply for ) appropriate security clearance.
Desirable skills will include:
Experience of heat transfer and fluid flow work within the nuclear industry would be a distinct advantage. Experience of working on projects requiring the combination of thermal and stress analysis. Familiarity in using Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc. Familiarity with MathCAD.
